Fires on ships reduce mission performance and are tragic and costly. They continue to be a problem, particularly on aircraft carriers. Firefighting equipment on aircraft carriers is poorly maintained in many instances and, therefore, does not function properly. A contributing factor is the lack of personnel trained to maintain new firefighting equipment. Also, current shore-based training programs for firefighters do not meet training demands, and formal selection procedures do not exist for filling training slots.
