Analytical models are developed in the report for: (1) soil loads from auger borer construction, (2) transverse bending stresses from pipeline pressurization in contact with soil disturbed by auger borer construction, and (3) three-dimensional stresses in buried pipelines subjected to repeated train loadings. In addition, an analytical model is developed for longitudinal bending stresses and deformations caused by carrier pipe settlement adjacent to cased crossings. Improved practices for cased crossings are reviewed. It is concluded that thicker wall pipe and greater depths of installation represent feasible alternatives to casings, although some additional evaluation of these alternatives is necessary to develop optimum design and construction procedures.
