Safe snowplow operation is a demanding job, requiring a keen awareness of conditions and location. Poor visibility due to windshield icing is a serious safety factor. The standard windshield defrosting systems are often inadequate to handle the volume of snow and slush thrown up from the plow. Ice builds up on the blades impairing the wipers ability to clear the windshield and holds sand which scratches the glass necessitating premature replacement. Also a high level of moisture generally exists in the vehicle cab from snow being tracked and blown in. This can cause severe fogging on the inside of the glass further hampering visibility. The objective of this research were to identify suitable heated windshield wiper blade systems for use in SDDOT snow plowing operations and evaluate their effectiveness in improving visibility statewide compared to standard, unheated wiper blades. A second objective was to identify any additional reasonable methods of enhancing snow plowing safety through improved visibility.
