A 21 year old groundman employed by a electrical line maintenance and construction company was electrocuted when an aerial bucket boom contacted a 7200 volt power line while the groundman was opening a steel door on the truck. Two line construction and maintenance crews were finishing a project involving replacing 5000 feet of conductor wire and 19 utility poles. One crew was moving the new energized line from the temporary tie off positions to the permanent insulators and removing the old deenergized line when the accident occurred. An aerial boom truck was moved into place under the new line. One of the groundmen was on his way to get parts from this truck. The lineman in the bucket raised it to inspect the new connections when he contacted, with the boom, a 7200 volt energized line. The groundman simultaneously opened the steel door of the storage compartment of the truck and was electrocuted. Following this accident, it was recommended that employers develop written safe job procedures which are specific to the task.
