There is growing interest in reusable or partly reusable systems for putting vehicles into a Low Earth Orbit. Such a vehicle can act as a launch pad for satellites to be placed in geosynchronous or other high orbits; a staging post for orbital transfer vehicles and an observation platform and scientific laboratory. Because of the market for communication satellites which is estimated at around $150 billion over the next 10 years and the military uses of space, the interest in hypersonics is increasing rapidly. Out knowledge of transition, separation, viscous interaction including shock interaction and base flows, and heat transfer needs to be enlarged.
