Destruction ground tests have been carried out using three scaled down solid propellant motors using pairs of V-shaped charges. Each motor is a one/tenth scale model of the first stage of the Mu-3C, an all solid propellant satellite launcher developed by ISAS. Destruction devices in these tests are roughly the same in function and installation as those for the Mu-3C. Several interesting results have been obtained on the breakup characteristics of the motor, such as mode of destruction, shapes of fragments of propellant and hardware, scattering distribution, the shock load undergone by the motor and the ambient overpressure. These results are expected to be useful for the prediction of the breakup characteristics of the Mu-3C during destruction in flight by the V-shaped charges.
