An Australian Defense Force requirement has been defined to provide in-country capability to support component fatigue life substantiation in selected Australian fleet helicopters, with initial application to the S-70A-9 Black Hawk helicopter operated by the Australian Army. The implications of this requirement are examined, and the need to assess the severity of the spectrum of normal missions for the selected aircraft fleet is supported. Justification for a program to assess mission severity from measurements of flight regime recognition data and loads in selected components in a sample of fleet aircraft, is provided. A program to substantiate the fatigue lives of selected Black Hawk helicopter components, subject to significant in-service loads, is outlined. The general requirements of airborne and ground data systems required in support of the program are examined.
