The International Space Year (ISY) 1992 is a worldwide initiative to enhance international collaboration in the field of space research and to increase public awareness of the benefits of space research for a better understanding of the burning problems of the Earth's environment. Key space missions which contribute to the ISY are: the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) of NASA; the European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-1) of ESA; the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1) of NASDA. Organization by SAFISY (Space Agency Forum on ISY) is described. The Earth science and technology projects, education and applications projects, and the space sciences projects are outlined. Special events are listed.
