Many modern flight simulators are equipped with motion systems having several degrees of freedom. However, information about the quality of the produced motions is usually lacking. This paper identifies the characteristics of a motion system, which determine the fidelity of motion cues as: a. the performance limits in each degree of freedom, b. the motion system describing function, c. the power spectral distribution and r.m.s. value of the acceleration noise in each of the various degrees of freedom of the motion system. Two measurement procedures are described to quantitatively determine these characteristics. The procedures described are illustrated with examples of measurements made on the three degrees of freedom flight simulator of the Delft University of Technology. (Netherlands)
