The various systems for recovering sounding rocket payloads are discussed. Emphasis is placed on those used by the French space agency in Guiana. The two main problems are identified as: (1) absorbing the kinetic energy of the payload to prevent impact damage and (2) reducing the recovery zone whose size and position relative to the launching station determine the method to be used.
