Attitude control for balloon and space-borne gamma ray and x-ray telescopes is divided into two areas: scanning and pointing. Currently, the telescope is pointed using an auxiliary control system (ACS) consisting of the standard CMG's, reaction wheels or torque motors and scanning is accomplished using the RUM (rotating unbalanced mass) actuator. The research conducted for this dissertation is motivated by the prospect of simplifying or eliminating the ACS by using a pointing control scheme incorporating RUM devices for pointing actuation.
