It is the purpose of the study to demonstrate how much a heel joint can be improved by incorporating the three features in four types of heel joints commonly encountered in trussed rafters. The heel joint and, especially, the connector-plate assembled heel joint can often be improved by (a) making it more rigid, (b) locating the fulcrum of the joint nearer the center of the span, thus reducing the free span of the lumber, and (c) transmitting moment forces effectively from the upper chord to the lower chord, thereby causing both chords to resist the moment forces.
