In the last several years, much attention has been devoted to the subject of side impact safety in passenger cars. During fiscal year 1985, the Motor Vehicle Manufacturer's Association (MVMA) sponsored the development of a thoracic sub-system test device and associated procedures. The report contains the findings from a study done to evaluate the MVMA impactor and its associated procedures. Three series of tests were performed using the impactor. First, its capability to distinguish between padded and unpadded door conditions was examined. Next, its ability to distinguish among various cars and between good and poor door/side structure designs was explored. Also, the results of one of the series of sub-system tests were compared to those from corresponding side impact crash tests. Finally, general usage of the device allowed for evaluation on various mechanical and software aspects of the impactor and its operating systems.
