The First United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) mission will be launched no earlier than June 25, 1992, at 12:07 EDT on board STS-50 Orbiter, Columbia. USML-1 is the first in a series of long module Spacelab missions dedicated to fundamental microgravity research. Columbia's crew, formed by members from the United States, will conduct science and technology investigations that require the low-gravity environment of space, with emphasis on experiments that study the effects of microgravity on fluid and transport phenomena, combustion science, biotechnology, and the synthesis and properties of materials. As its name implies, USML-1 is formed through a congressional charter to further develop the United States' knowledge of space science and encourage cooperative involvement of NASA and commercial industry. The enclosed Mission Operation Report (a) describes the objectives of the USML-1 mission; (b) provides a brief description of the science investigations and the USML-1 configuration; and (c) outlines the ground operations elements for mission support.
