The damper is inserted in vehicle suspensions to introduce a damping element in contrast to the elastic element which supports the vehicle. The damper has two distinct functions: to slow the movements of the wheel by resisting the inertia of the unsprung masses; and to slow the movements of the body structure by resisting the inertia of the sprung masses. These two demands at times exclude each other and only with specific damping laws can a good compromise between road holding and ride comfort be obtained. Comfort is linked to the transfer into the passenger compartment of forces generated in the damper and by the spring and to the amplitude and frequency of the body structure oscillations. New developments in the damper are reported. These include: Variable Rate Damping; the Electronically Controlled Damper; and the Pressurized Damper.
