The level of integration of microprocessors with space instrumentation is reviewed. Their inclusion provides improved measurement resolution, improved reliability, a more efficient use of limited spacecraft resources, and provides control for complex instruments. Microprocessors are relied on to perform mission critical calculations, while future uses involve increased on-board intelligence and on-board expert systems.
