Three simulators are being utilized to confirm the efficiency of the flywheel substation. The first is a controllable tilt table on which a flywheel substation will be mounted for investigation and demonstration of flywheel precessional effects on bearings and the potential gyroscopic effects as related to aircraft stability. Concurrently the substation will be subjected to an energy input and extraction cycle which will measure the effects of fatigue on the flywheel and its associated equipment. The second simulator is to demonstrate the performance of intermittent duty cycle type aircraft functions utilizing flywheel stored energy. The third simulator is to demonstrate the application of flywheel energy storage to continuous duty cycle type aircraft functions, as typified by surface control actuation requirements.
