The DO-178B standard is specially developed to provide a certification basis of avionics software, without going into detail of the software development process. We have used the DO-178B standard as a common basis for comparison to DOD-STD-2167A (military), ESA PS-S05-0 (space), and IEC65A(Secretariat)122 (industry). Comparison topics include: life cycles; prescribed documentation; configuration management; verification and validation; and quality assurance. The results of our investigation will assist in understanding the rationale certification according to DO-178B of software that was developed using another standard; and certification of software using DO-178B, in concert with another standard.
