It takes more time to get onto a Capital Beltway interchange than to travel around it. This comment by one industrialist suggests what is happening along portions of this Interstate highway. The Beltway has attracted so much intensive development that several of the interchanges are seriously congested with peak-hour commuter traffic. Solutions include redesigning of certain interchanges and/or control of development along the intersectioning arterials. Study methods included personal interviews with plant managers and shoppers, mailed questionnaires, examination of public records and other secondary sources. A number of findings emerge from this study. For example, the Beltway has facilitated interaction between Maryland and Virginia: in work trips, service areas, recreation, shopping, etc. The Beltway opened up new land for development, helped bring development in areas between arterials, and gave direction to economic decentralization which was previously underway in the Washington area.
