Interest in the alternative transportation fuels (ATFs) has increased in recent years due to the drives for cleaner air and less dependence upon foreign oil. This report, This report has its roots in Section 503 of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT), which directs the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to provide the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Congress with following information on alternative-fueled vehicles (AFVs) and ATFs: The number, type, and geographic distribution of AFVs in use; The consumption of ATF's and 'replacement fuels'; and The number and types of ATF's made available.
