The research study provides an up-to-date account of methods of prediction of aerodynamic characteristics for both combat and transport aircraft (excluding rotorcraft), over conditions ranging from low speeds (CTOL, RTOL, STOL) through subsonic/transonic to supersonic speeds (climb, cruise, maneuver, descent). Aircraft lift and drag estimation methods are analysed along with related aerodynamic optimization techniques, taking into account practical methods for wing/body aerodynamic design and boundary-layer flow treatments. The prediction and implications of special aerodynamic characteristics associated with engine installation and external store effects are examined, relevant stability/control needs are reviewed, and some aircraft noise restraints on aerodynamic design are noted.
