After a four-year period of decline, traffic accidents involving large trucks in Michigan have increased in both 1983 and 1984. The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) carried out an analysis of existing computerized traffic accident data from the State of Michigan, the NHTSA Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS), the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety (BMCS), and the UMTRI Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) files to identify trends in the involvement of large trucks in traffic accidents in Michigan, and to examine the accident experience of trucks with longer trailers.
