In the initial formulation of a computer simulation model to simulate traffic approaching an intersection, the need for several types of data were recognized. One such need is a record of the velocity patterns during an intersection approach. This type of data can be used to determine when, where and under what conditions various kinds of decisions are made. Another type of information required is the type and amount of scanning that is done by drivers. A full-scale study was carried out in order to obtain data on velocity patterns and scanning. The basic information provided by the study is a time history of various measures as the vehicle approached a variety of intersections. Supplementing this information was data on when and where scanning took place. Three variables were manipulated in the study: (1) the type of control, (2) the velocity at 1000' from the intersection, and (3) the type of maneuver to be executed at the intersection. The three types of controls used were a traffic light, a two way stop sign with a stop and a two way stop sign with the right of way. The speeds used in the study were approximately 35 mph and 50 mph. Finally, the three maneuvers were straight through, left turn, and right turn. (Author)
