Recently, much interest has been generated in the use of the Bragg scattering process in periodic waveguides to provide wavelength-selective reflection in thin-film lasers. In this paper, the principles governing the operation of thin-film Bragg lasers are reviewed and examined. The prospects of such lasers for use in integrated optics and the technological problems associated with these lasers are discussed. (Author)
