The main purpose of the seakeeping trials is to investigate the seaworthiness of a vessel, i.e. to study those qualities which determine the ship's behavior in waves. It is usually considered that the seaworthiness of a ship is typified by: the lateral, keel, and vertical rolling and by the acceleration in the ship's hull caused by this rolling; the loss in travel speed; by the pitching of the vessel; by the flooding and spraying of the decks and the superstructures; by the exposure of the ends and of the propellers; by the strength of the hull and of its individual designs; by the possibility of the utilization of the ship's technical equipment during movement through waves, and also by the general adaptability of the vessel to navigating under stormy conditions.
