This report is concerned with the optimal choice of ship size and speed for the deep sea cargo liner trades. The aims of the report are to distinguish those characteristics of the liner trades which affect ship size and speed, to explain how they differ from the equivalent features in other sectors of cargo shipping, and to show how they limit the ship choices available. The basis of the report is that the choice of speed and size is viewed a priori i.e. with reference to new investment, and not as a question of the best deployment for already existing ships.
