This paper looks at the U.S. Navy's contribution to the National Military Strategy of deterrence in the threatening environment of Low Intensity Conflict (LIC). It describes how LIC is politically and militarily defined, examines the LIC environment from a maritime perspective, discusses the four categories in which the military can be involved, and finally, suggests some alternatives for maritime forces in the LIC environment. Through analysis of the examples sighted, this paper highlights the viability and effectiveness of a maritime force in LIC.
