The major purposes of this fact-finding study were to determine the motivations and the resultant behaviors of various classes of motor vehicle owners in preserving the safety integrity of their vehicles, and the various processes used to accomplish vehicle maintenance. This includes State inspection, the methods by which the owner-drivers determine the need for maintenance, the performing agent, and the frequency with which each safety-related component is either checked or maintained. A large-scale mail survey was conducted by using a questionnaire containing 34 multiple questions, the answers to which could be rapidly completed by merely checking the appropriate frame. The questionnaires were sent to 58,344 registered owners in the 50 States and the District of Columbia who were driving American made automobiles manufactured between the years 1958-1968. (Author)
