Aircraft afterbody design is still one of the most critical problems for industry, especially in fighter aircraft development. The flow around the rear part of the fuselage is characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of interfering physical phenomena such as thick turbulent boundary layers, viscous flow separation, hot jet interference at the base and the boat tail, and jet plume expansion in three-dimensional transonic and supersonic flow. Even experimental techniques hardly fulfill requirements for correct wind tunnel simulation of all effects. Drag prediction and drag minimization procedures for complex configurations are strongly dependent on the reliability of numerical and experimental flowfield simulation. This publication reports on the progress which has been made by AGARD-FDP Working Croup WG08, established to evaluate the state-of-the-art in experimental and computational techniques for aircraft afterbodies.
