The utility of computer techniques for design of ESA spececraft was assessed. It is concluded that spacecraft design cannot be automated, but could be facilitated by an Assistant Designer Expert System (ADES). Human and sociological issues should not be overlooked if such a project is undertaken: early determination of precise users is a necessary step for a successful introduction of design expert systems. A stepwise approach is recommended, with a first block of the ADES project on a subject to be chosen by ESA. This subject should possess a stable and limited domain knowledge; existing and recognized expertise; interested future users; combinatorial complexity with mixed numeric and symbolic decisions to be made; and choices should be made on the project hardware and software that take into account performance, availability, and possible specific modifications.
