The prototype Special Airborne Medical Care Unit (SAMCU) consists of a rigid wall patient enclosure, a nurse station, and a wash station for use in C-141 and C-130E aeromedical evacuation mission evaluations. The enclosure contains an emergency treatment center ('A' station), a three litter patient tier ('B' station), an internal sink, and an attendant station. Biomedical and subsystems equipment are installed within the enclosure. The nurse station and wash station attach externally to the enclosure for mission arrangements and are stored within the enclosure for the cargo (backhaul) arrangement. The enclosure is environmentally controlled and acoustically insulated. Oxygen and electrical power are supplied from the aircraft systems. The enclosure is positioned within the aircraft using the cargo winch and deck rollers, and structurally attached to the cargo deck with the standard cargo siderail and tie-down provisions. The major Phase I design requirements of noise attenuation, temperature control, good lighting, 50% relative humidity, good patient accessibility, and patient isolation capability are incorporated in the prototype design.
