The Connecticut Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, has installed a Tire-Sand Inertial Barrier System at the junction of Routes 2 and 17 in Glastonbury. This system uses scrap tires as containers for the sand mass and supports fabricated from 55-gallon (208.1 liter) paint drums. Design, fabrication and construction details are presented for the selected test site. The field exposure of the system is presented. The performance of the system is judged to be satisfactory in decelerating errant vehicles.
