The air-defense rocket is launched from the surface of the ground or the ocean to down enemy aircraft; this is the surface-to-air guided missile. The air-defense rocket is a two-stage rocket of moderate size. The rocket engine of the first stage pushes the guided missile to a supersonic velocity, and the second-stage rocket engine maintains this flight velocity. The rocket body is slender, gradually tapering to a point at the nose. The fins of the rocket are cross-shaped or x-shaped so that high maneuverability in either one of two planes is possible. A remote-control system and automatic aiming system are used to increase the missile's accuracy. (Author)
