Test work is described that examines the value of hydrostatic proof pressure testing in screening worn tire carcasses before retreading. Results are given from dynamometer wheel tests on a significant sample of retreaded passenger car tires. Each sample unit consisted of a pair of tires, one of which was hydrostatically pressurized to approximately 75% of the mean burst pressure before testing. There is evidence from the tests that the pressurization is neither beneficial nor harmful to the subsequent tire durability. Acoustic emission, pressure, pressure rate and volume were also recorded as functions of time from a large sample of worn passenger car tires during hydrostatic pressurization. Correlation studies between these data and the carcass condition show no simple relationships between structural flaws and these recorded variables.
