For pipelines to be laid offshore in water depths greater than about 3000 feet, pipe design will be governed primarily by external pressure (collapse) considerations and internal pressure (burst) considerations. The paper presents a set of design criteria for deepwater pipelines, based on results of Shell's Deepwater Pipeline Feasibility Study (1), as well as comparisons with other experimental and theoretical results. The design criteria, in general, establish limits on the wall thickness, yield stress, initial imperfections, and pipe weight, in terms of the maximum internal operating pressure, the maximum external pressure or water depth, and the near-bottom ocean currents.
