The report describes procedures to use in choosing and training drivers for specialized transportation systems. Beginning with an analysis of the tasks the typical driver of a transit vehicle will have to perform, the report then sets forth a series of factors which can be considered in choosing driver candidates. The report also covers material which could be included in any formalized driver training effort, including basic driving skills, accident avoidance techniques, first aid and emergency medical skills, passenger assistance techniques, and human relations. An extensive set of appendices covers currently available selection tools and training packages which might be utilized. Although focused on the requirements of human service transportation, much of the material is applicable to any small transit operation.
