The purpose of the investigation was to obtain deeper knowledge of the effect on traffic safety achieved through replacing 4-way junctions on rural roads by two staggered 3-way junctions. 253 pairs of existing staggered 3-way junctions have been studied. The data consisted of accidents reported to the police during the period 1977-1983. From the results obtained, the number of standardized accidents (taking into account both the number of accidents and their seriousness) is reduced by 0-40% when a 4-way junction is replaced by two staggered 3-way junctions.
