The efficiency of acoustic sensors for helicopter detection and classification was investigated. It is shown that the classification can be based on the estimation of the target speed, as well as on the emission characteristic and the received signal bandwidths. The line structure received from the rotors can lead to helicopter classification using spectral analysis. An example shows that the detection range is 4 km with a detection probability of 80 percent and a false alarm rate of 0.0001. The detection range is larger for heavy helicopters under favorable wind conditions.
