The need for a high Reynolds number transonic wind tunnel for Europe has been well established by the Large Windtunnels Working Group (LaWs) of AGARD. Preparatory investigations for the design of an adequate facility are pursued at present. The urgent need for such a tunnel is explained, especially from the point of view of German aircraft research and industry, and a survey of the expected German workload for such a facility is given. It is pointed out what reduction of risk or what improvement in aircraft performance, i.e. financial savings will result from the availability of such a wind tunnel. It is made clear that economical improvements as stated will be crucial concerning the successful design of competitive future aircraft and that, thus, the availability of a high Reynolds number transonic wind tunnel alone, perhaps more than its actual amount of utilization, may be decisive in the survival of the European aircraft industry.
