Several 5-foot ship models were towed in irregular waves and the added resistance measured and compared with the predictions based on spectral method. The transfer function was derived earlier from tests in uniform waves. The results demonstrate that the linear spectral method could underestimate the added resistance of an average cargo ship or a tanker by 25 to 45 percent. For slender hull forms the predictions are between 30 and 75 percent of the measured added resistance in irregular waves, depending upon the ship speed and the severity of the seaway. (Author)
