Atmospheric sampling was performed on January 15, 1979 in the Dulles International and the Washington National Airports (Standard Industrial Classification 4583) to determine if asbestos (1332214) fibers from ceilings were being released into the air. The evaluation request came from the Federal Aviation Administration following adverse media publicity about an operation on the vocal chords of an airline employee. Ceiling samples were analyzed at 40 to 50 percent and 1 to 2 percent chrysotile (12001295) asbestos for the Dulles and National Airports, respectively. No detectable airborne concentrations were found at either airport. Complaints of throat irritations at Dulles Airport were attributed to low humidity (13 to 16 percent). The author recommends periodic monitoring of ceiling stability, investigation of sealant applications, replacement of vent duct wrapping, and provision of dry throat soothers for employees.
