The influence of free surface tanks with partially raised bottom on ship roll damping was discussed. The purpose of the introduction of a cambered shoal in the rectangular free surface tank was explained. The effect of a roll damping tank on the rolling motion of the ship was shown qualitatively by a simplified theoretical treatment. The results of an extensive series of bench tests with tank models were presented. On the basis of the theoretical approach mentioned above and the test results, a practical example was worked out. It was concluded that the introduction of a partially raised bottom in the rectangular free-surface tank contributes to ship roll damping, especially in ships with relatively low metacentric heights.
