An inland waterway port model suitable for port planning and operations studies is developed. After a critical review of the literature and of available data sources, a preliminary model design is formulated. Based upon field observations of port operations at typical inland waterway terminals, the preliminary model is revised and refined. The final model breaks port operations down into seven elementary processes. Using queueing theory, probability, and other appropriate tools, submodels of each process are developed. Model application is illustrated by two examples. An annotated bibliography is included.
