Chapter I reviews the origins, development, and current posture of the U.S. aeronautics industry. Chapter II examines the status, development, and operations of foreign aeronautics industries challenging the U.S. aeronautics industry militarily and in the civil marketplace. Chapter III explores future U.S. military needs for aeronautical systems and projections of the worldwide civil aviation market. Chapter IV addresses the potential for military and civil aeronautical R&T and provides many examples of potential benefits. Chapter V examines, from an economic perspective, government involvement in R&T for civil applications. Chapter VI summarizes current NASA/DOD programs, facilities, and personnel in aeronautical R&T. Finally, Chapter VII focuses on the development, evaluation, and selection of national goals, government and agency roles, and policy alternatives for operation of aeronautical facilities and dissemination and control of research results.
