This feasibility study investigates the requirements to be met by commercial vehicles in urban areas, the fuel cell system, the concept of electric-powered vehicles, the concept of energy storage, the technical concepts of urban buses and distribution vehicles, fuel supply, and the relevant marketing requirements. Fuel cells are the key components of the technology under review. The membrane technology is considered to be the most suitable vehicle fuel cell technology. The achievable production costs and the mass production maturity of the drive concept introduced are still uncertain. The result of the study shows that prototype fuel cell vehicles can be built and operated within a short time, i.e. within 3 years, both from the technical and industrial points of view. Proposals are made for suitable pilot and demonstration projects. (orig.)
