Ship groundings and collisions have a cruel way of scuttling mariners, the most seaworthy of the lot as well as those not so seaworthy. These incidents have plagued seafarers down through the years, and the unending stream of high-placed appeals to eradicate them attests to the problem's ever-present urgency. In the expectation of reducing these unnecessary incidents and their associated costs, the writer develops a definitive model of the incident problem yielding direct relationships between selected critical parameters. These parameter relationships are to be used to develop training and administrative techniques to minimize losses from ship groundings and collisions. Additional models are also proposed for study.
