The XM428E1 cartridge was developed to satisfy the need for an inexpensive and less hazardous (than the M384 HE cartridge) found for training of helicopter pilots and gunners in use of the M5 armament subsystem. Engineering tests were conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground over the period of July 1967 to 24 September 1968. Service tests were conducted both at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Ft Rucker, Alabama during the month of June 1968. During the engineering test one early function of the XM428E1 projectile occurred while firing from an M5 helicopter mounted subsystem in flight. Only superficial damage to the aircraft occurred. It was concluded that the XM428E1 cartridge satisfied all engineering and service test requirements other than the 40-foot drop and functioning reliability requirements. It was recommended that the XM428E1 cartridge be considered suitable for use as a training round with the M5 helicopter subsystem, but efforts be directed to improving functioning reliability and eliminating the occurrence of early projectile function.
