In mid July, 1986, the MV ICEBIRD arrived off Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and accomplished the earliest unescorted marine transit to the Alaskan Beaufort Sea by a ship other than a Polar icebreaker. ICEBIRD clearly demonstrated that early season commercial operations in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas are feasible. Observations of the ice and weather conditions encountered during the voyage and how these affected the vessel's progress are reported. In addition, the report estimates the ice loads the ship could experience in extended season operation in summer Beaufort Sea ice conditions and assesses her ability to resist those loads.
