The role of the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) is to conduct research and investigations which will advance aeronautics and space technology and to provide large-scale test facilities to be shared with other governmental organizations. Since its foundation in 1955, NAL has been making significant technological contributions in almost all areas related to the development of aircraft, rockets and spacecraft in Japan. This report, which is being published in English to increase international understanding and promote mutual cooperation, describes the major accomplishments and applications that have been made during the past three years. The report illustrates both the broad range of research highlights at NAL and the contributions of this work toward the advancement of aerospace technology in Japan. I hope that this combined volume will serve its purpose and help promote further understanding of our research activities by those who are concerned with the advancement of aerospace technology.
