The idea that design requirements for the frangibility of obstacles at airports can be developed if empirical relations can be established between the damage to aircraft resulting from a collision and the energy necessary to disconnect (part of) the obstacle and to subsequently accelerate it is discussed. This approach is analogous to a procedure followed with success in the case of bird impacts. A modular structure with easily breakable joints and low fragment mass is advocated.
